to get the path to keep details while smoothing out the paths.

All I know would not fill a thimble...
Converting selection to a path always loses information, but
how much could be avoided with correct selections in the
settings I do not know. Sorry.

Are you asking for scripting purposes T? I've read the instructions at Gimp.org and went for a lie-down in a dark room!
All I know is what Wallace told me when I was working on perspective text at GC, best to re trace paths by hand after bucket filling the selection.
