Thanks rich, I fear I'm a bit out of my depth, however, I do understand what you mean, Remember I'm running Windows, I can't find the file contextrc. At present I'm looking in program files> GIMP 2, is this the correct path?

animicule, thankyou, the color swop on default (black and white) just remains white and 413929, it doesn't revert to black.

Regardless of OS, contextrc is in your Gimp profile C:\Users\your-name\.gimp-2.8

Interesting, I'm running windows 10 with Gimp 2.8.22 and I didn't have the contextrc file either, so I added it and inserted the line "(foreground (color-rgb 0.254902 0.223529 0.160784))", this gave the brown foreground colour on start up, I then deleted the line "(foreground (color-rgb 0.254902 0.223529 0.160784))" and after restarting the colour was back to black. I don't know why it wasn't there but will keep it for now

RJKD, I meant if you click on the icon with the small black/white screens -= kitty corner to bottom left - from the color swap which is at the top right.(color swap has the 2 arrows on a curve <- not that one)

Just wondering...

animicule, I see what you mean, if I click that little box, it goes back to black, (also if i press D on the keyboard, it goes to default black and white).
Just trying to track the path where the contextrc is. Steve Reid seems to have his head round it, I'm not sure how to find the code when I do find it and I have Notepad which I've only used once when following a tutorial by Tim (admin here) on creating a filter.
I fear I may be in over my head with this, however I will try to follow any help offered as I can only learn, I'm grateful for the help I'm being offerred, thankyou.

At least it is working then, so it must be a personalized setting.
you are possibly on windows 10, - I don't use it, but
if you can goto Start - Control Panel - Appearance and personalization, click on Show Hidden File & Folders....
once you figure that out, goto whatever the search box that appeared when you click on the windows icon on the taskbar.
and type in contextrc if you got this far, when it shows the file, right click on it and choose - open file location ...
then it will open the folder and you should be able to get the folder name, or at least open the file in notepad to make the correction.
These are instructions for windows 7, maybe helps, maybe not...
Good Luck
