Create Saturns rings - Script for Gimp

Post#1 by Steve Reid » 08 Aug 2017, 11:42

There are two images in this zip file, along with the script which is located at "<Image>/File/Create/Patterns/Saturns rings"
saturns rings.zip #
(105.38 KiB) Downloaded 24 times

EDIT ignore the big image in the zip file it was included by mistake

The script selects and copies a single pixel wide vertical column of pixels from the centre of the image, then pastes it one pixel width at a time across the entire image, next it uses "Filter > Distorts > Polar coordinates" to create the rings. The rings created will be circular if the data input is 90, becoming increasingly ovate if the data input is decreased

The image "test-1" in the zip file was the one used to make the rings seen in the image below, I've included two images so anyone can run the script on them to get an idea of how it works

After the script has been run, a look at the layers dialogue shows four layers

If the "graininess" layer is made visible the rings take on a very roughened look, the opacity being reduced to lessen the effect

If the "vertical gradient" layer is made visible the roughness set with the "graininess" layer is reduced gradually in a vertical direction

When the top three layers are merged into one the rings are ready for use

NOTE: When this script is run it displays an error, but the script doesn't crash, I hope

Nice work steve. When I started to learn Gimp about 9 years ago I came up with a similar script is call "Planetary Ring System". The website is well know by a lot of Gimp users; Gimp Plugin Registry. here is the link http://registry.gimp.org/node/9489

Thanks RJKD, a fine rendition, I'm also a big fan of space scenes

A fine script Conbagui which I've used in the past, I lost it and many others when my last computer failed 18 months ago
