Creating a cool color to black and white transition effect in GIMP

Post#1 by trandoductin » 06 Oct 2016, 19:07

For this tutorial, we'll be a scaled down version of this image --> Frozen in time
1. Open up the image in GIMP. We assume you have black and white as your foreground and background color (If not make it so).

2. Right click layer. Select "New Layer".

3. When "New layer" window opens up, click "Foreground Color". Then "OK" to create new layer filled with black.

4. Now we want make this layer to be applied as Color Mode. So under Layers window, click the "Normal"(drop down) next to Mode: and change it to "Color".

5. You'll see your image change turn to black and white. Now right click top layer. Select "Add Layer Mask"

6. When "Add Layer Mask" window opens, click "White (Full Opacity)", then click "Add" to add the white mask. This white mask is saying everything on the layer is having the Color mode effect applied to. We'll use the blend tool to change the Mask in next steps.

7. Choose/Click the "Blend tool". Under tool options, for "Shape:" click the drop down and select "Radial".

8. Under tool options, click the gradient and select "FG to BG (RGB)". So we'll be blending from FG to BG. Black to White for the mask.

9. Depending on what you want you may choose to reverse the gradient by click on the "reverse" icon that looks like a double arrow.

10. Now click center of image (depending on image, but this one I think would look nice since everything seems to point toward the center) and drag it toward a corner and let go. We're blending from center toward the outside of image.

cool_color_to_bw_transition_effect_10_click_center_and_drag_to_a_corner_and_let_go.png # (221.21 KiB) Viewed 1205 times (Watermarked | Thumbnail)
11. You should now have an image that has color in the middle and slowly transition into black and white toward the outside like below. If you have center black and white and transitions to color toward the outside, you'll want to go Step 9 and repeat the process.

cool_color_to_bw_transition_effect_11_depending_on_reverse_or_not_result.png # (362.41 KiB) Viewed 1205 times (Watermarked | Thumbnail)
Play around with step 10. You don't have to have from center to corner, you might want to drag a shorter distance to have a sharper transition.
Good luck and have fun! ;)
