Creating planet using planetary ring Script

Post#1 by trandoductin » 04 Oct 2016, 17:05

We'll be using the Planetary Ring System scheme script (by sambrookjm).
1. Open an image with a planet generally in the center of image with transparency around it. Here we're just going to use a planet-like image created using GIMP's Filters->Map Object->Sphere (from a square 600x600 image) (more details on Creating simple sphere in GIMP).

2. Run Filters->SambrookJM->Planet Rings...
Set image width and image height to match our planet's image. Set rotation angle to about 60 (you can try other settings but I like 60 it's nice)

3. Result after running script. You'll get a new image that has the ring on it.

4. Ctrl-A to select All of the ring image. Ctrl-C to copy the whole ring image. Go to image of our planet and Ctrl-V to paste it in there as Floating Selection.

5. Right click the floating selection and select "To New Layer". This puts the ring as a new layer on top of our planet.

6. Click on the planet layer. Right click and choose "Alpha To Selection" to select the planet.

7. Planet is selected.

8. Use the "Free Select Tool". Hold Ctrl key (on Windows) and click 4 points (plus returning to the first point) to select area that we do not want to cut away (area where ring is in front of planet, like polygon shown below. This will subtract area from selection.

9.We're left with half the planet selected including part of the ring that we're going to cut away.

10. Now click on the ring layer to select that layer.

11. Press "Delete" key (or Ctrl-X) to cut away that part of ring.

12. Now we can File->Export As (on Windows) as a planet with ring around it.
