Merging 2 seperate images to one

Can't seem to find the topic for complete beginners, however it's after midnight and these eyes are what they used to be so sorry if i'm posting in the wrong place. Is there an understandable tutorial or a method to teach how to bring 2 or more layers together? Like if I open an image, and try and create an effect for the image it open on the top beside the first image. How do I get the 2 together? Any point in the right direction or someone who can help me out would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance.

Are you trying to put them side by side or blend them into one image? If you are trying to open all in the same window, use open as layers, not just "open". Open will keep starting a new window with the new image.

Gnerd, you can click on this "Active" button it shows a list of all the active topics.
Sometimes it goes so fast here on GL. It looks like a space shuttle

You can 'swop' layers between opened images without destroying the layers.
You may wish to practice this by creating two images open at the same time each with 2 colored layers and by holding down a left click of the mouse on any layer, drag it over the other image to activate it and release the mouse, now your first image still has 2 layers, your second has three.
Just have a play, I'm not a good teacher, here's a picture description.
