High Gloss Fonts Re-visited for Release 6 Custom Font Tools

In the process of adding coloured gloss to a font face I looked at my own tutorial to check out the steps – I wasn’t sure which mode I had originally used. I realised that the tutorial was way out of date because of the development of Custom Font Tools since uploading the tutorial/helpsheet.

Custom Font Tools Required
Custom Font Face Maker – currently at v. 0.01
Custom Fonts Effects Only – currently at v. 0.06

The steps remain the same:
1. Choose a custom font
2. Fill the font with a mid-grey colour
3. Add bevel and shine effects to create the glossed highlights
4. Add the final colour

An example of the workflow:

1. I chose this white base custom font – but any font will do since you just need to use the font shape to add a base grey colour to.

2. Add a new layer to the font and fill this with a mid-grey colour (in this example I used a grey with the hex notation of a9a9a9).

Use the CF Face Maker filter to add the colour to all the character layers using just the default options.

3. Use Custom Fonts Effects Only to add a bevel and shine to create the glossed highlights.

Set these options to Yes – the default settings should work well.

4. Choose your new colour, add a new layer to the custom font layer stack and fill this layer (or re-use the original colour-filled layer with the new colour). I used a bright green colour as in the original tutorial (hex # 2bf213).

Use the Face Maker filter again but this time set the layer mode to Color (HSL).

NB If you want to apply black as the colour for the characters use Grain merge in the New Mode option of the Face Maker filter.

Gimp 2.10.10 & Windows 10

Thanks for all your tuts & information skinnyhouse...it all looks very interesting... ...

I started working the above tut but found that the screen for Custom Font Effects Only is too long for my laptop screen (1600x900) & I don't seem to be able to shrink it down...I tried using the Enter key & hiding my bottom taskbar but still no luck...

Would it be possible to add a scroll bar to that screen so the menu could be made shorter or is there something else I could try?

Many Thanks,

There is a scroll plug-in for .py plugins. I use a portable Gimp 2.10.8 currently so the installation goes: C:\users\Pat\Desktop\Gimp-2.10.8\lib\Gimp\2.0\Python

Make certain that you place the two files in the Python folder. It will not work in plug-ins.

There should already be a gimpfu.py file in the Python folder as that file is necessary for many operations in Gimp but it is not amended with the scrolling feature. Remove it from the folder but keep it in a saved file or somewhere in case you need it later.

gimpfu.py is the scrolling plug-in. I found it would not work for me unless I had gimpui.py in the same folder so I included it for you. Hope this works for you!

Thanks for your help Pat...

I don't know if this makes any difference but I'm not running the portable version...I'm on 2.10.10; Windows 10...

I followed your instructions thru my program files but I do not see a Python folder; this is what is showing:

Should I just create a folder & move the files in or I wonder if the folder could be lurking somewhere else?

That sounds just what I'm looking for so I can see the "Okay" button... :) ..

This link (especially post #8) may be of help.

I was hoping that the developers would have added a fix to this problem by now.

Glad it worked for you - I do test my dialogs to make sure they fit within a screen height of 1080 - so your machine would have fallen just under that size.
