I've already come up with a solution to this,
which works when using smooth-palette in Gimp version 2.10.

That method works ONLY if you want stripes from the same color family. If you want different ones (say, red and green), you HAVE to use smooth-palette from GIMP 2.8.

Right.
There may be a way to circumvent this, but I haven't explored what these options might be.
