Re: How to change brush spacing in GIMP?

You can use it AFAIK only on a newly created brush, which has a very "limited" shape (identical to what you can do with "create a new brush" interactively)

I always have problems when trying to work with brush in scripts..it's never straight forward like the other stuff.

awaiting for rich's info on future....
what he showed on 2.10 panel for brushes - if the modification is consistent on Gimp source - should then suppose the availability at least of a new instruction:
gimp-context-set-brush-spacing (currently not existant)
which could help a lot

Different time zone another day

I find it works this way.

For a vbr brush in your Gimp profile. It is a text file with the spacing defined.

Code: Select all

GIMP-VBR
1.0
01_Small
22.000000 <<<<<<<spacing
1.000000
1.000000
1.000000
0.000000
That can be edited using the brush editor and permanently changed. (you can also edit it manually)

A gbr brush is a different matter, the spacing is defined when it is created. A binary file and the spacing is buried in the file header

Code: Select all

Bytes 24 - 27: spacing
Type: 32 bit unsigned int
Value: Default spacing to be used for brush. Percentage of brush width.
Need to permanently change the spacing, it is grayed out, make a new brush.

The slider is another matter. It is session only. Is the Gimp 2.9.5 (will be 2.10) re-positioned slider in the Brush Tool Options any different from existing? I do not think so, just a more convenient location.

Rich, do you have 2.10 (2.9.5) installed?
Did (could) you check whether my "hope" that in the pdb.interface the "gimp-context-set--brush-spacing" be added? (like there is the "gimp-context-set-brush-angle" and "...aspect-ratio" and "... size" ?
THAT would be great

I use a portable linux Gimp 2.9.5 derived from an unbuntu ppa: That lets me have both Gimp 2.8.20 (updated it a couple of hours ago) and Gimp 2.9.5 co-exist.

Not clever like you guys, but if it helps this is from Gimp 2.9.5 looks like there is a set-brush-spacing

this is a very good news, thanks Rich; the missing "set-brush-spacing" will be there!
