How to install the Astronomy plugin

Post#1 by Conbagui » 29 May 2017, 15:32

Hi my friend I recently created the Galaxy tutorial and I included the "Astronomy" plugin that creates great realistic Starsfields in different patterns. I want to emphasize this nice plugin by sharing how to install it in Gimp.

Conbagui, I installed the plug in as shown on the print screens, restarted Gimp.
But it doesn't show up. Don't know what I did wrong.
The Astronomy plug in I find in my folder.
When I click 'Help' > plug-in Browser > Astronomy, there is nothing to see.

On your 3th print screen I notice there is a Photoshop folder.

Uninstalled the plug-in and reinstalled it. Now it works, but still with some errors.

It's and old plugins that let you use some Photoshop filters called PSPI. But it's old and every time I upgrade Gimp some of the filter won't work. I really don't use it anymore. Do not pour the content of the Astronomy folder in your Gimp plugins folder because your plug in folder could have dll files can have the same name but the functions are different. Astronomy plugin have dll file with the same name you already have in your plugins folder and what it does is that you get a duplicate or the same file gets overwritten. Put the folder itself inside the plugins folder, the go to: Edit> preferences> Folders> Plug-Ins. When the window popup, click on the little white page icon on top left and then click on the browser folder on the top right. keep clicking this browser folder until you get to the Astronomy folder. The directory is: User/.gimp-2.8/plugins/Astronomy. Click Ok on the preferences window to accept and restart Gimp. Good luck

By the way, the same thing happened to me and some how when somebody explained the same dll crashing I learned how to install this plugin in Gimp. There is no instruction anywhere else beside the one I posted in my tutorial.

Thank you for the explanation, Eddie.
The first time I didn't poor the folder, installed it as a whole in the plug-in folder.
But then the Astronomy plug-in didn't show up in the filters menu.

I have made a bit of a mess in Gimp now. And today I haven't much time.
But I'll give it a try with your new explanation.

Well done, Nancy!
I hope I have the same sucess :)

Ella i'm sorry you are having trouble after days literally, trying so many times and like you losing things and causing errors in gimp the light bulb finally went off after Eddie explained it to me for the 100th time  . When I tried putting the whole folder in the plugins folder at gimp2.8 plugins I still had the same problem for some reason. The way I finally got it to work was, when I unzipped the Astronomy folder and opened it there are 2 files, plugins and scripts. I created a new folder and named it Astronomy and put the plugins folder into it and then placed that folder into gimp2.8 plugin folder. I also created a new folder for the scripts folder and named it Astronomy scrips and put that folder into my my gimp2.0 scripts folder. Then I opened gimp and followed Eddies tutorial on how to bring the folder up in gimp and then closed gimp and restarted and did a happy dance  . I hope I did not confuse you more, i'm not the best at explaining things. Good luck my friend I hope you find success!!
