How to make a more convincing cut and paste in GIMP

Post#1 by trandoductin » 02 Oct 2016, 02:45

I used to do this simple cut and paste to compose images or collages
For this post I'll use scaled down images from these links to illustrate. ... g-at-night ... re=pumpkin
1. Open the image you want to compose your cut and paste or collage on. In this case the image of "Tree in the fog".

2. Open the image(s) that has the component you want to cut from (in our case it's just a pumpkin).

3. Use the "Free select tool" to select (by start clicking around the pumpkin and returning to starting point).

4. Ctrl-C (on Windows) to copy the pumpkin.
5. Go to the "Tree in the fog" opened image and Ctrl-V (on Windows) to paste our pumpkin in there.
6. right click the Floating selection (in Layers window) and select "To New Layer"
7. Use the "Move Tool" to move it to where we want it (click on pumpkin and drag to move).

And that's pretty much how i used to do it.
But then my graphic designer friend showed me a trick from long time ago to make it look better without the sharp edges look.
That's to do feather select. Before step 4. From the menu Select->Feather and enter something like 5 pixels (for these images, for different images you might increase/decrease the feather pixel size).
And the result is much better, not sharp cut out look but much smoother.
