How to make surface look perforated

This is in effort to try to answer this reddit question --> https://www.reddit.com/r/GIMP/comments/ ... look_like/

1. With your sample perforated image, zoom in (Ctrl+Mouse scroll wheel). Use :rectangle_select: (rectangle select tool) to select a sample of
4 holes. Make sure you copy the extra area too touching the holes outside of selected area so that the pattern is seamless like shown. You can select more holes if you want but 4 should do the trick.

2. Edit/Copy selected are (Ctrl+C). Edit/Paste As/New Image (Shift+Ctrl+V).

3. Use rectangle select tool to select just the holes (Hold Shift to make multiple selections. Select/Invert (Ctrl+I) to invert selection. Delete to cut away the surface leaving behind just the holes.

4. Ctrl+A to select All. Ctrl+C to copy. Now we have the pattern stored on the clipboard that we can later use as pattern fill.
5. Go to your image where you want to the surface to look perforated, make a selection of area you want to look perforated.

6. Windows/Dockable Dialogs/Patterns (Shift+Ctrl+P) to open Patterns dialog window. Now the first pattern is from the clipboard, you'll see the pattern with holes you've copied in step 4. On a new layer, now drag it (the first pattern) onto your image and let go. It'll fill your image with that holes pattern.

7. This works if it's on a white surface, on surfaces of other colors, you don't want any white with the dots (holes), so you'll want to Colors/Color To Alpha/(select White) before step 4 to make all the white transparent.

The pattern after doing Color to Alpha (of white color) should look something like this.

Here's an example below after Color To Alpha (of white color) and dragging it onto new layer to make the dark red area perforated.
