I wonder how these spammers work.

Post#1 by trandoductin » 28 Oct 2016, 21:41

I have been getting new members that go through the trouble of signing up and go through the email activation process.
Just to post a spam about some chinese printing company.

Obviously, they're spam because i recognize them, they all the same. Many posts are even super off-topic like the title would be about something else then in somewhere in the middle of the post there'd be a link but the link isn't even in bbcode format.
It's like cut and pasted in there a html link.

Do these even work? random posts to random bulletin boards? People are just either going to ban them or ignore them.
I wonder if there are companies that actually hire people that don't speak English to do these spams. Or are these bots, if these are bots then they're really good at getting through the sign up process. And they even picked a random nationality flag too. These bots are way more than advanced than anything i could ever write.

I'll never understand their goal, is it cheaper to hire real people to do these random spamming then it is to advertise properly with google if you're a decent company.

Ah well, i'll just keep disapproving their post(s) and banning them.

Well it's a pain having to ban these spammers.
But because of these spammers the forum looks like it's got more members that it actually does. I don't know if that's bad or good. I know spammers from real members so it doesn't make a difference for me but for someone who's just visiting for the first time they might know that and i don't know if having these banned accounts are good or bad.
I could go through and delete these accounts but then those same emails are able to sign up again.
Leaving them there prevent them from using those emails again and creates more of a hassle to sign up new accounts and prevents same people from trying to spam us.

It turns out many of these spammer's account are from different IPs but belong to the same physical address. So i emailed their ISP see if they can do anything about it. I think many of these spams are automated too.

If you've use it, that's what I mean.
Stopforumspam.com is like a website utility to catch spammers.
I use it all the time on GC and I catch a lot of them.
