They have an API exposed to users to use. They say it's okay to query it as long as I don't make requests on every single page request as not to DOS bomb them.
So last nite, I wrote a script that i put right at the beginning of the register page.
The script checks to see if your IP exists in my database (This is so i don't DOS bomb stopforumspam.com).
If the ip exists i check to see if its' banned or not and exit if it's banned.
If the ip doesn't exist in my database then i make the API call to stopforumspam.com and get frequencies number that is reported. if it's reported i save it to my database marking that's banned, if not banned i also save it to database to prevent future API calls for the same IP.
Then I tested to register with account named teresa making sure that a regular not banned user can still register.
If its' banned all you'll see a blank page when you try to register.
So far since last night, there's one IP that's banned.
As i report my spammer's accounts to stopforumspam.com I noticed many of them came from the same IP.

That sure sounds like a lot of work.
Good luck with this security measure.

I was going to install the Stop Forum Spam extension developed by someone on phpbb.com but it doesn't work for phpbb 3.1.10 (only for 3.1.9).
It wasn't too much work at all it's just single page script that included in the upc.php that hooks up to my own database table.
I wrote another simple page that just displays what ip-addresses i have in my database so far too you can see here
ips.php
it just simply shows ip-address ban-flag date-added.

Those ips are of people who tried to go to the user control panel upc.php whether it be logging in, registering or editing their profile in user control panel today.
But I changed it so it only checks on registering, so only ip-addresses of people who tries to register will be added to that list.
