Layering and layer mask

Can anyone suggest a tutorial that goes a little deeper into understanding layering? I can follow a tutorial, but I just can't get it, the info goes in and seems to disappear in the bermuda triangle known as my brain lol. I've done nearly all the youtube tutorials, and the best by far was The Little Web Hut!! Easy to follow but I can't get it to stick, if I try to go off a bit on my own i'm lost. There are several older Photoshop Tuts I would love to try in gimp but they don't really use layers it's seems so I get turned all around. Any helpful sites or advice would be so appreciated!! Thanks in advance.

I don't have reference to a tutorial but my basic understanding is this.
1) Layers higher up appear in front so you see the layer on top first, if there's any transparency on that layer than lower layers will show through.
2) And Layer Masks are black and white and/or gray values where the mask is white that part of the layer will show, where the mask is black that part of the layer will be hidden or transparent and gray values on the mask make that part of the layer partially transparent.
3) You can paint black and/or white the mask to show or hide whatever parts of the layer without destroying the layer's content, if you do something wrong you can always reverse the process by painting black or white on the mask.

Please don't beat yourself up, I'm the world's worst for it, we're on a learning curve, after about 2 years I've got to the point where I accept several 'failed' attempts will ultimately bring success -with a little help from my friends. This is the vid that finally helped me understand layer masks. Happy Gimping.
