I created the gif above in a couple of minutes by using the two scripts and the images contained in this zip file
scripts and images.zip #
(82.41 KiB) Downloaded 17 times
You will also need the .scm script Reverse Layer Order, check it is installed at <Image > Layer > Stack > Reverse Layer Order>

The offset layers script is a work in progress, so no error checking has been built into it yet, located at "<Image>/Layer/Offset layers"
The stack shuffle and merge seems to work ok, located at <Image>/Layer/Stack shuffle and merge layers"

To create the gif above (using the files in the zip file)

Install the two scripts in your plugin folder and restart gimp

First open fish.xcf in gimp and run the offset layers on it using the values shown on the zip file image data.png
Run the .scm script located at Layer > Stack > Reverse Layer Order
Save as "something".xcf

Rerun the fish.xcf with offset layers, changing the "Amount to offset the layers" from 12 to 6
Run the .scm script located at Layer > Stack > Reverse Layer Order
Save as "something2".xcf

Open the background layer, duplicate it until there are 21 layers
Save as "background".xcf

Next with an empty gimp (important) click on each of the three .xcf files, ensure that the background is the last one clicked (important).
Now run the stack shuffle and merge script (ignoring the options), it will assemble all the layers from each of the .xcf files into one gif ready for saving or playing as an animation, it takes a minute to run

Note: if the .xcf files do not contain an identical number of layers (here it is 21) the stack shuffle and merge script will not run

Steve Reid, since you have scripted something for this Do you want this on its own thread instead of OMG's Downudner Art Thread?
I know it's in reply to OMG's thread but i thought it might be better on it's own thread since it's also a script that people can download.
Let me know

okay it's moved here. Hope the subject is okay. If not I think you can edit it since you're first post's poster.

offset-layers script mk2a
offset-layers-mk2a.zip #
(1.12 KiB) Downloaded 10 times
In this updated version I've added code to reverse the layer order, so the two lines (Run the .scm script located at Layer > Stack > Reverse Layer Order) in the opening post instructions can be ignored
