Thank you Dinasset for your explanation. I did several tries but not good luck so far, at least not so nice as yours. :( Perhaps trying it more times.
Ella, nice result in mosaic effect. I like it a lot. :)

I was not able to have a good outcome. I lost color and detail when I indexed. Also, I do not have enough fabric patches right now either for the patterns needed. If I can I will give it a few tries later to see what I did wrong.

Yes, when you convert to indexed you loose a lot of color saturation, especially when the number of colour areas is small (4-8).
Thus, increase (a lot) the saturation of the image before converting to indexed.
If you (and Issabella) want a set of fabrics, I can post it here.

Thank you Dinasset, but my bad results aren't because of fabric patterns, but I don't know how to do it correctly, I think. I find it a bit complicated for me, to selection each area with patterns and apply an stich pattern as a border.

- the original source image
- the number of colours areas you like to have
- (if available) your result in .xcf
