This isn't my thing, but I was testing out the warping on "map/sphere" by using neapolitan stripes that I just brushed on a 2000x2000 image canvas...Once I'd figured out the ratios to make it appear even, I felt I should do something with my shiny marble. I used a stock earth image and then took a stock moon image. For the moon i made 2 copies (once I got it scaled right), and on one set the layer to "dodge" @ about %50 transparency, and the other was set to overlay. I bump mapped the neapolitan marble with the overlay layer to give it more depth. Finally I added some shadows, and a little blur (which I thought made it more 3D but now I don't like)...But basically this was just an exercise to see the warping on map/sphere for myself.

You held those color separations really well, nice. I found this and had some fun with it http://www.home.unix-ag.org/simon/gimp/globes.html
