On a mission to promote GIMP

Post#1 by trandoductin » 08 Oct 2016, 18:42

I had a chat with a friend in a different country.
And I mentioned GIMP, and to my surprise, he asked me what GIMP was. I had to say it was "like" Photoshop. Then he said: "Ah, ok!".
So I am wonder why is it that GIMP is 100% free, yet... people still don't know of its existence.
This makes me want to promote GIMP. People should know about it. It should be more popular than Photoshop.
I thought all creations or editions of images that used GIMP should now say something at bottom image like "Created/Edited in GIMP" and then in addition to that you can write your website or whatever site you want to promote.
This way, when images get posted online and make it into Google Image Searches, anyone who sees these images will start to notice that they are "Created/Edited in GIMP" so people would know about it more.
So I wrote a script to automate the process of adding this information. I don't think it needs to be fancy. It just needs to show that information.
You can download the script to help you with this process here --> Add Gimp Decor Script for GIMP
With the script, you can change the fine text to say anything, but I highly recommend keeping the text "Created/Edited in GIMP" there and add your own website or email or whatever.
What I usually do is I have the first line as image's title, 2nd line is "Created/Edited in GIMP" and 3rd line is "created for http://gimplearn.net/" but you could have more lines.
It's quick and easy to do and I think I owe it to GIMP for letting me able to use GIMP so freely, it's the least i could is to mentioned that it was created/edited in GIMP.
Also if the user base grows, that just means more opportunity for more developers to volunteer to release even better versions of GIMP.

We just recently started teaching Jr High students GIMP on Ubuntu machines. The school is always low on funds for the Arts, so donors are giving PC machines, Ubuntu gets loaded on them, and GIMP is the premier software that the students learn to use. All FREE of course. It all starts with one, and builds from there.
