Philosophy of plugins and scripts

Post#1 by Alchemist » 07 May 2019, 22:01

Hello all,

So I have been wondering the past few days, what is your philosophy on plugins and scripts? Never too many, just a few, only cool ones (what is a cool one), none, and so on? What one's do you consider must have? What's your 5 to 10 favorite or most used?

Later then, Alchemist.....

I guess it depends lot about what is the main focus of your usage.
I have some obsolete old scripts, but lately I've been creating custom presets using the built-in GEGL filters,
it's now so easy.

These are additional that I use often and find indispensable:
G'mic
Layer Effects (python)
Resynthesizer
Path Tools by Ofnuts
Addon Collection Manager
Luminosity Masks (by Tim and saulgoode)
Shellout
Bimp

I don't shoot photos or do photo restoration.
Adding these windows plug-ins because I'm into vectors, cartoon and weird.
Color Selective Blur 0.6.2
Cartoonizer 0.8.5

The new simplify by Tim is cool. How many GL coins do I get? ;)

There's Luminosity Masks that creates masks only and then there's Luminosity Masks done by me which creates masked layers for you ready to use (toggle on/off). Which one are you referring to? hehe

Hello all,

Thanks for the feedback nidhogg and Tim. Say nidhogg, how are you using "Shellout" ?

PLEASE, if you read this post (Philosophy of plugins and scripts), do supply comment. I really think it can help all of use in choosing plugins and scripts. You may even learn of a plugin or script that does just what you have been wishing for, but never new it existed. Thanks, Alchemist.....

If you don't know the purpose of Shellout.py, it is used to call external applications to load the image from within Gimp and send it back after editing. One thing I have used it for, is to vectorize a bitmap quickly in Inkscape. You can add almost any program in the drop-down list. The initial purpose was to be able to use some .8BF plugins, that did not work with the ancient PSPI if I'm right.

I'm still developing my "must have" list, as well as figuring out what came with vanilla GIMP and what I've added. My focus is scrapbooking with GIMP, which includes cropping photos, applying masks, brushwork, occasional photo enhancement (minimal), adding text and artwork. I also do a bit of work creating my own masks, brushes, and artwork for my page layouts (usually attempting to customize something I saw on a scrapbooking forum).

Right now I'm feeling the urge to do a Marie Kondo on my plugins, scripts, brushes, fonts, etc. There's just so much clutter that I've accumulated in the short time I've been using GIMP, stuff that I'll likely never use.

enxio27 - Do you use or are you aware of Ofnuts 'addon collection manager' plug-in?

I and many other Gimpers use it to control/manage all those 'extras' to which you refer in your post.

@oldmangrumpy Where do I find this addon collection manager plugin? I did a search of the forum and found only the three references to it in this thread (including your post and mine previous one).
