How to create a satin background in GIMP (below is a shortened version of the tutorial).
This tutorial can be found on YouTube by several authors, I have based this short tutorial on GIMPtricks version.
NB. The image you create will NOT scale well, so it is worth considering what size background you require from the outset.
Create a new image to your desired dimensions (here I’m using the GIMP default new image size).
Go to>filters>Render>Pattern>Sinus

Screenshot 2017-07-11 11.06.27.png # (147.66 KiB) Viewed 411 times (Watermarked | Thumbnail)
First select your colors, here I choose two shades of purple, however shades of cream, red, gold and blue work well also. Think jewellers shop.
Select the Blend tab and enter the settings below
Check Sinusoidal
Exponent -0.91

Screenshot 2017-07-11 11.25.32.png # (139.23 KiB) Viewed 411 times (Watermarked | Thumbnail)
Now select the Settings tab, here the values are important to achieve a ‘realistic’ satin outcome, I can only achieve this with the following settings
X - 11,3925 Y – 20,2532 Complexity – 5,41
Random Seed 1586156458
Check ‘force tiling’ and Distorted. OK.

Duplicate layer, Go to Colors>Desaturate>lightness>ok
Layer mode to dissolve, opacity to 25
That’s it, export as .jpeg / .png save as .xcf (whatever you wish.

Made a simple jewel on a satin background. The fitting I made came out of OMG's tutorial.
OMG's more extensive jewellery tutorial that's for later.

Thanks for the tut, RJKD.

Thankyou.

Lovely colors Issabella, so glad you can use it. In the Winter I think I may script this effect.

RJKD, did you know that the result is a seamless pattern? At least it is 1000*1000, is it in 640*400, too? Great news if you create a script for this effect. :happy_purple:
Ella, you did a very nice creation. :gimp_clap:
