Script of Conbagui's Gold Coin tutorial

Post#1 by animicule » 05 Jul 2017, 14:47

07/12/17 I have updated the script to process at 300pdi
which will not change your default settings for dpi.
The path changing size problem was caused by
dpi settings that were different than the dpi settings
in use when the paths were created.

After you download the zip package, you will need to
copy a few brush and vector files that are hopefully
all included.

And, if you do not have ofnuts Text along Path script,
it is included also.Vertical Block brush

The brush files need to go into your gimp brush folder (.gbr and .vbr files)
the .py files go into your gimp plug-ins folder

There are a couple of vector files (.svg) that you
should create a folder and shortcut to.
There are instructions on how to do this included
in the package (as .jpgs).

Conbagui's How to create a Gold coin with your photo engraved
tutorial is also included in this package.
It contains:
How to create a Gold Coin.pdf
Black Leather.jpg
Ring Hardness 100.gbr
text-along-path-0.4.py

This package contains:
BA_Conbagui_Coin.py
How to Setup Saved Vectors
Vertical-block.vbr
CoinEdge.gbr
a_path.svg
b_path.svg

As usual, I leave a layer stack so that you may
customize your outcome. Conbagui's tutorial has
some instructions on customization also.
This script will not bump map your photo in the center,
that is better done yourself!

Also, you may run this script with no options,
and basically just generate the basic layers so
that you can follow the tutorial and do the path creation
by hand and the bump mapping etc..

Have fun!

The script also gives you options for color selection.

Animicule, I cannot get the script to work. I have a folder for the paths which it recognizes but keeps telling me text is too long for the path. I have been trying it with your defaults so it should not be. What needs to be done?

It works for me every time, unless my text is too large or long.
I do not remember what the length of the vector is, off the top of my head, and I
am not at home where I have no internet, so, until tomorrow, why don't you try
making the legend text with fewer letters until it is within the correct length, and
then see what it looks like (if the letters are huge, or just normal size),
1. if they are normal size letters, like in the examples, then the path has somehow shrunk, if that is so...
Run the script again, with less characters until get an outcome. (you can create new paths and save them)
From within the outcome, follow Conbagui's tutorial at the point of where you use the path tool to make a line across the middle
and pull it up in the middle to make a new path, click the move tool to exit from the path tool, which saves the path, then I made another the same way but just pulled it down (there are extra guides from within the script).
When you have your upper and lower legend paths, from the Paths TAB, select and delete a_path and b_path, then rename your new
upper path (the one with no lettering, just the shape) to: a_path and the lower to: b_path
Then right click and export them (you have to do one at a time) to your saved vectors folder (or what you named the save folder) and overwrite the a_path and b_path. At this point (just so you can see for yourself) restart gimp to clear any possible cache...
Run the script again at defaults (your new path should be correct size so defaults should work) but making the text length smaller if you have to, and you should notice that the lettering is backwards.
Go to the Paths TAB again and save the a_path and b_path once more, overwriting them. Run the script again and all should be fine...
The first time you export the path, it gets reversed, then the 2nd it gets reversed again back to where you want.

2. If your FONT SIZE is somehow way to large (as compared to the examples), then simply reduce the font size....
I suppose there could be a difference in the fonts....

3. I suspect something happened to the vector files, I am fairly sure they were longer then 300 something, but can't
find out until I get home much later today...

******************** yes, the path length was above 1,300 so something is happening with the .svg paths. 7/7/17

Please let me know what you find Pat!
I would like to understand what happened to the .svg files --
I will post the .svg files tomorrow - in their regular format,
not zipped, and perhaps also zipped 2 different ways to
see if that had something to do with it...
I appreciate your help!

Pat, here are the 2 vector files unzipped.
.svg files cannot be directly uploaded in gimplearn, so I added .txt to the extension...
just rename them without the trailing .txt

I hope this is not an issue with GIMP above 2.8.16 ---
