Update to Version 0.03 for Custom Font Metallic Effects for Gimp 2.10
I have made the following (high-lighted) changes to the filter dialog:
Control for the amount of original texture to employ is provided by a slider.
Control for the grey used as a base colour for adding metal textures is also now provided by a slider.
I have greatly reduced the default value of the selective blur artifact radius.
The existing character textures that seem to give some of the best results all use a wide range of shading in their designs; that said some dramatic effects can be created where there are just two colours in use.
If you find that the resulting effects are rather dark try lowering the percentage of black in the shade of grey with the slider and/or set the ‘Apply lighting plug-in’ option to ‘Yes’.
If you find that the results are rather flat try raising the ‘Final bumpmap depth’ option to the same value as the existing bumpmap depth.
Below are the results of my experiments on the various metal textures using three different character weightings and a range of settings.
Part 1
Metal Texture: Bright Gold
Image set 1: Created from plain white characters using a grey base with 50% black and an artifact blur radius of 0.0. You can clearly see the artifacts created during the bumpmap process – it is up to you whether you consider them to be an attractive feature or an undesirable blemish. Image set 2: As above but with an artifact blur radius of 10.0. There are far fewer artifacts but the process has introduced some banding. Image set 3: Created from plain white characters using a grey base with 90% black and an artifact blur radius of 0.0. Image set 4: Created from plain white characters using a grey base with 10% black and an artifact blur radius of 0.0. The next set of images employ the original texture of the characters – which were created with the following pattern fill from Gimp. Image set 5: Created with the original texture set to 50% using a grey base with 50% black and an artifact blur radius of 0.0. Image set 6: Created in the same way as with set 5 but with an artifact blur radius increased to 10.0. Image set 7: Created with original texture set to 100% and the percentage of black used set to 90%

Part 2
Metal Texture: Dull Gold
Image Set 1: Created from plain white characters using a grey base with 50% black and an artifact blur radius of 0.0. Image Set 2: As above but with an artifact blur radius of 5.0. Image Set 3: Original texture set to 100% with the percentage of black used set to 10% and an artifact blur radius of 0.0. Image Set 4: Original texture set to 100% with the percentage of black used set to 50% and an artifact blur radius of 5.0. Image Set 5: Original texture set to 50% with the percentage of black used set to 50% and an artifact blur radius of 5.0. Metal Texture: Annealed Gold
Image Set 1: Plain white characters with the percentage of black used set to 10% and an artifact blur radius of 0.0. Image Set 2: The same characters with the percentage of black used set to 50% and an artifact blur radius of 0.0. Image Set 3: The percentage of black used set to 100% and an artifact blur radius of 0.0. The next sets of characters had another Gimp texture added before applying the ‘annealed’ texture. Image Set 4: Using characters with this texture, the annealed metal texture set to 10% and the percentage of black used set to 10%. Image Set 5: The same settings but with the annealed metal texture at 50%. Image Set 6: The same settings but with the annealed metal texture at 90%.

Part 3
Metal Texture: Glitter Gold
Image Set 1: Plain white characters with the percentage of black set to 90%. The lighting plug-in option has been used to enhance the effect. Image Set 2: Original texture employed set to 50% with the percentage of black also set to 50% and with the lighting plug-in option set. Image Set 3: The same characters without the use of lighting produces a much flatter, stony look. Metal Texture: Brushed Gold
Image Set 1: Plain white characters with the percentage of black set to 50% and artifact blur radius set to 0.0. Image Set 2: Textured characters with the original texture employed set to 10%, the percentage of black set to 50% and the lighting plug-in set. Image Set 2: The same settings as above but with the original texture employed set to 90%. Metal Texture: Verdigris Gold
Image Set 1: Plain white characters with the percentage of black set to 50% and artifact blur radius set to 0.0. The verdigris base is taken from the metallic darker colour which, in the case of the gold colour, is black. Image Set 2: The same settings with an extra ‘verdigris’ texture layer added to the custom font file. Image Set 3: Striped texture characters with the original texture set to 50%, the percentage of black set to 50% and the artifact blur radius set to 0.0. Image Set 4: The same settings used as the previous image but with an extra ‘verdigris’ layer added.
