I'm really impressed by this effect. could have a lot of fun if I could figure out how to create it (in Gimp I mean - not in real life places)

That is neat. Have you seen the street art where they paint on the street and make it look like there are lakes and deep caverns in the street? People are afraid to walk over the area.

It looks like in order to create that you'd need some sort 3D wireframe like in blender (which i completely forgot how to use) then you'd play with plane by forming/deforming it.
Let me think on how we can create something similar on GIMP, I think based on grey scale value we could create something similar.

Yes Pat, we had a guy do it in Sheffield and it was so real, no matter what angle or distance, one was of like roadworks with the street dug up, the only people who didn't 'fall for it' were little kids, everyone else walked round, great fun.

How's this one? it doesn't do X deforms. since we can only encode height values using gray scale.
