Layer mask -selection option

I'm studying http://www.asganafer.it/book-of-miracles-part-1/ at GimpChat "Post subject: Advanced photomanipulation tutorial - Book of incredibles" I have been trying different methods to achieve a good outcome, with some success (see attached image).
I did ask for help but got signposted to a basic tut on layer masks. This is my question - At step one of the tut it says make a layer mask and choose option selection. With this the outcome of the second layer (the ship) is all messed up and I've tried every which way to see how I may have misinterpreted the translation but keep getting the same out come (insanity - I know).
I originally didn't use a single layer mask, just worked on paths and selections, now I've done some homework and see the magic of masking I want to progress. Any help with this 'selection mask' issue would be gratefully received. Thank you.

I am not sure which steps you're talking about as i don't see English version of the tuturial.
But using layer mask is very simple once you understand how they work.
On the mask, anything black will make layer's content completely transparent (invisible) and anything white will make layer's content 100% opaque (visible).
Here is a simple example.
We have the book image on top of blue gradient background.

Now to make just to make the book showing of the book layer. We make a selection around book.

Then right click book layer, choose Add Layer Mask and choose Selection. It'll add the selected content as white, and everything else black.

As a result, the mask is making the book visible (white on mask) and everything not selected black not visible (black on mask) so the blue gradient background shows through.

Thanx a lot T. Maybe I'm over analysing and google chrome translates a bit off. I just want to be as knowledgeable as possible (I also appreciate there's no right or wrong way, it's down to the individual how they work).
This is what confuses me...This is the instruction before the caption I posted previously;
"Now we have to cut out our book and to do that, because the background is monochromatic, it is very simple, just use the fuzzy selection tool . Let's take it and click on the white part to select, immediately after the level of the book do destro- button> Add layer mask and select as in the image:"
So if I'm deleting, why would I bother to mask after?
Just tell me to shut-up at some point, I'm like a dog with a bone when something baffles me

you mean delete the area around the book? instead of masking?
It's the same result. but masking doesn't destroy the layer's content, so you can go back later and paint black or white over the mask to edit what's shown and not shown, where if you delete the content, it's cut down to the book if you wanted to show more you'd have to go get the original content back.
Masking is preferred because it's considered non destructive editing (or something similar in meaning).

Thank you Tin for explaining why using a mask. I thought the same thing, just use delete. But the mask option would be better for me as I am prone to making mistakes, and then must go back to fix! This would definitely make it easier.

Yep that makes pure sense, in fact I did have to go back to the book image to retouch.
However...i can't work around this option - mask - selection. It just screws up anything you try to do on subsequent layers.

It shouldn't do anything with your subsequent layers, maybe if you upload a zipped .xcf of what you think is screwed up and i can tell you what's wrong...probably not that case but maybe you have your mask selected and then you do operations to it so you think you're working with layers when you're changing the mask then i can see how that could be confusing.

Hi T, it appears I didn't need to make a 'selection layer mask', so, thankyou for yours and Pat's help. I am, as a separate matter, going to progress my learning and find out how these are actually used in practice.
