I've tried several times to test this nice script but I must be doing something wrong because it stops crashing Gimp.
Tin, please could you explain more about the steps to follow in this process?
I don't understand where to do the selection, on source layer or on transparent layer. Thanks a lot.

create a new layer and selection on new layer, it'll use 'Source' layer to grab average color but it draws on new layer. so you have to make selection on new layer.

'Featuring Members' Images' always bringing me new discoveries!
I had no idea this script existed.
I would even be curious to examine it, but the fact of having to install 2 other plugins just for it to run, kind of discouraged me in this adventure.
It still looks promising...maybe I can't resist trying it out in the near future.
