Custom font for noobs

Post#1 by PixLab » 04 Nov 2021, 09:44

I'm quite interested in "Custom font", but I'm a total noob
I already did generated some font to layers, I wanted to "reshape" them but the path tab is empty
So my question is:
How can I get every characters as a path, to be able to transform/distort each character? then fill them back (please don't tell me I should do alpha to selection / to path manually on each layer :scared_smilie: )
Is there another way? If so please point me out to it

Also I'm lost with most script's naming, or I might miss a script....
which of those script in that list (see screenshot below) will allow me to "write" something once I've made a custom font, I did not see any of these script having a text box... can someone point me where to add the missing script?

EDIT: OK I found it, it's called paragraph, sorry

Custom Font from here:
viewtopic.php?f=4&p=1513
Version 16 is quick.
Later versions have "random layer that starts with" - slows down substantially

Thank a lot, nice video, now I understood that the Background layer will be used to "face" each letter, that's cool :gimp_clap:

I don't know which one I have, but it's actually very fine for me, seems to be fast and does a great job.

I'll try, when we create a custom font (first time we generate it from a normal font) >there is no paths of the letters, I mean something like the screenshot below

I thought there was paths to modify the look of each letter, like in the example above I modify the path of letter "A" to give a twist to the original font ;)

Not sure what it's about, it sounds like it's not for me, yet... I'm a real noob with custom font
I will come back to it when I will make few working custom font

In all case thanks a lot Blightly for your useful input.

Custom Font On Path is used once you have completed your custom font.

Hey Patrice...

Good to see the dipping toe.

Persevere and ask questions.

With regard to my scripts for actually writing some custom fonts in Gimp...

Fontslab manipulates text along a path that you have to draw with the path tool.

Wordwall paints text randomly in the custom fonts contained in a folder - as an attempt at word art.

Paragrapher writes the text you enter as lines of text in the custom font you choose (although there is an option to use your own paths). This is the easiest one to get to grips with.

As for paths that are the actual character - you can obtain these by using an option from Custom Font Outlines Only - but there is no way to use these to redraw the character again. It is perfectly do-able but no-one has wanted to do it up till now!

Oh and there are distortion packs 1 and 2 for applying some of the Gimp's distortion filters to custom fonts.

You could try these options:

Custom_Font_Outlines_Only_v004.py - viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2953&p=35905&hilit= ... ter#p35905

Alpha-Layers to SVG Plug-in -
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2943

It is also interesting to be able, after having edited the paths, to convert them to layers quickly, without having to be one by one, manually:
ofn-export-paths - https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Expor ... -layers-py

@Krikor yes your second and third link seems to be the one I need, thank you (I'll take a look at it tomorrow, it's very late here)

@skinnyhouse yes, I'm diving in, you can be assured that I'll continue to ask questions :fb_haha: thanks for all your help.

@Blighty I keep that tip, for curved custom font it's very useful, thanks for your help

I'm going to dive into my bed now, it's very-very late where I live :scared_smilie:
I saw also that there is a thread where we can share our font, I'll look at it tomorrow as well.
Thanks to all of you.
Patrice
