Thanks to you both. Can you point me to some tutorials on using paths (in either GIMP or InkScape)? I have no clue where to start with that right now.

Thank you, Tin! BTW, here is a photo (from the book) of needle lace made from that pattern (lace from another pattern was inserted between the two top rows):

This photo is much cleaner and simple invert and then play with contrast/brightness would turn it into clean pattern

OMG, Tin!! That video tutorial is EXACTLY what I've been needing for so long!! This is perfect!! (I hope you know you've created a monster!)

Now, can you point me to a tutorial that shows how to put text along a path? Or maybe there's a plugin/script?

https://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-p ... s/scripts/
look for ofn-text-along-path.zip
I think you simply right click the path and there'll be option to get at the menu text-along-path can't remember exactly where just look around you'll find it.
UPDATE: right click an existing path, then Tools->Text along Path.
PS: Love being able to create monsters LOL

This is worth reading:
https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-Paths-Basics

It is a general discussion on paths, so is applicable to both Gimp and Inkscape.

You can also turn it into a pattern and then just fill any size image needed.
