How to make embossed paper?

Post#1 by enxio27 » 09 Feb 2019, 04:04

I want to make embossed "paper" (tone on tone) for digital scrapbooking. I have some patterns to use, and I have played around with the embossing filters and scripts, but I can't seem to get it to work the way I want. I've searched for tutorials, but none of the ones I found are getting me there, either. Any ideas on how to go about this, or maybe a link to a tutorial I missed?

Can you give an example of the effect you are wanting?

Here are a few. They don't have to be this fancy, but these were the best images I could find to demonstrate the effect I'm trying to create. I just want to take a pattern (perhaps a herringbone, or a quatrefoil, or a grid) and make it look like the texture was embossed into paper.

Here are my tries with grid and herringbone.
I just created a solid color layer and use a black & white design as bump map and used a high ambient light factor.

That's great! I'm still pretty new to GIMP. Can you tell me the steps you used?

Okay.
  1. Put your black and white design on a layer.
  2. On another layer (on top) fill it with solid color that you want your paper to have.
  3. Select (make your solid color layer active)
  4. Click on menu item Filters/Map/Bump Map. For Aux Input, click the big question mark to select the black and white layer (to use as bump map). Then you can play with Azimuth and Elevation (optional). I just bumped up Ambient Lighting Factor so that it's not so black and white but subtle. You can see the changes on your images as you play with these settings.
  5. Click OK when you're happy with the settings.
Hope that helps.

Hi Enxio27

In addition to what Tim has provided, the Bump Map filter parameters also provide an option (on 2.8 but I presume 2.10 also) for 'Invert bumpmap'.

I used it with one of my patterns on 'rusted paper' as below -

These are beautiful, thanks! Unfortunately, I'm going to have to do a little "doctoring" on the design files I have. I thought they were all black and white images, but they're not. I'll be back with some of my attempts once I fix that issue.

Here is a tutorial for using Bumpmap in 2.10.
