Pat and Issabella - thank you very much; your kind words mean a lot to me.
My garden is full of spring flowers right now so I am taking photos, then making brushes from them in GIMP.

Here is one of my Australian native orchids.

OMG, I don't know whether it is your deliberate decision or your monitor has an unbalanced colors/values set-up, but I just wanted to tell you that images like the orchid show an exaggerated contrast, which IMHO is not suitable for flowers (maybe it comes from a long-running habit to create golden circles?).
Look at the histogram: mean values are almost absent.

Diego - thank you very much for your informative comment, which actually backs up a nagging feeling I had that there was one 'grain merge' too many in the xcf file.

I did not know there was a histogram capability ( ) but I have just deleted that extra layer from the original file, checked it with the histogram and I think it does improve the result - never stop learning eh!

Thanks again Diego - by the way my 2.10 laptop is still under repair; probably should have bought a new one.
