Text Path Extrude Rework

Post#1 by mahvin » 05 Nov 2016, 17:08

Ok, my idea is already in existence at least in partial form. Ofnuts' inbetweener plugin works flawlessly, but leaves me wanting more. It may or may note be obtainable.

Using acceleration and over 50 copies of the text path, I can get close to what I am looking for.

I then merge all those newly created path layers and then stroke the combined paths with black. I fill in any open spots with black using the paintbrush, then blur the outline 5px, then run a curve on the outline to sharpen it (my attempt to eliminate the 50 little sharp corners that display on the combined path layers). I then select the outline and create a new path, and end up with something similar to this ( I shrink the selection by 3px or so before saving it to a path):

I would prefer to have it so that the outline created from the 50 paths could become one path and eliminate the need for all these extra steps. I'm just not sure if it's even possible. Ofnuts has a Wrap Map plugin that sort of does the concentric path creation, but its not in perspective, just makes a path of the text outline in one dimension.

After generating inbetween paths, before merging them all.
Would this script work for you?
I wrote it just now.
Select All Paths/Vectors (addition mode) (and creates a path from that selection)

Thanks, Tin! It's a lot better than before, just requiring a little bit of clean-up on some of the edges. I appreciate it!

good enough to check it off as solved? (You can click the check mark on my replied post with link to script, and it'll mark it as solved with green check mark when viewed in forums).

Mahvin, I just whipped up something you might like more for your intended use.
As I think ofnuts' "Generate Intermediate paths" was intended for other uses.
You're just trying to grab the surface area between two paths to make your text look black 3D like, you don't necessary care about the number of steps to generate in between.
Please give this a try and let me know if it fits your need better as you don't have to do clean up work or the rough edges because there are none.
