Adding Panels to Custom Fonts
You will need to use the following Custom Font Filters:
Custom Font FaceMaker
Custom Font Layer Utils
Custom Font Embossible
I have included a set of resources for you to use:
Versions of the plug-ins which will need to be added to your user plug-ins folder
Boogie Nights Whitebase Custom Font
I wanted to add a little bit of interest to some of my existing custom font bases – the ones that have both broad and thin strokes:
The method that seems to work for me involves creating another version of the same font, but with a good amount trimmed off. This produces a set of panel characters that can then be saved and combined with the original characters in a variety of ways and modes. These panels can be applied as highlights, or holes or used with an embossed effect – I am still exploring!
Step 1: Create the Panels
Open a base custom font in Gimp (in my example Boogie Nights).
Call up the Layer Utilities plug-in dialog:
Filters>>Custom Font Tools>>Custom Font Layer Utils 1.29 Tabbed...
Click on the 3rd tab and use a 'Trim' value of 30 - you may need to adjust the 'Trim' value for a different custom font base.
Save the new characters with a new name to avoid over-writing - something like 'Boogie_Nights_Panel_Whitebase', perhaps.
You can use this set of characters as highlights by combining (see Step 4 for more help) them with a set of decorated custom font characters by using modes and effects with the panel charaters:
Step 2: Apply Embossible to both the character set and the panel set
Open the main custom font file of characters in Gimp.
Call up the Embossible Filter dialog:
Filters>>Custom Font Tools>>Custom Font Embossible v. 1.04...
Use the settings shown to add a flat emboss – make a note of the azimuth value that indicates the direction of the light; in my case 135 degrees.
Save this file with a new name - you may wish to re-use it a number of times.
Open the smaller panel version for this set of characters, if you have already created one. If not make one now as shown in Part 1.
Bring up the Embossible filter dialog again and change the azimuth value to send light in the opposite direction across the characters. If you are not sure about this new value, add 180 to the original number; If that value is larger than 360, subtract 360 from it.
My original azimuth was set to 135 so 135 + 180 = 315.
Save this file with a new name so that it can also be re-used.
If you want to apply different décor styles to the embossed panel and the embossed main characters, use FaceMaker to do that at this point.
Step 4: Combine the characters
Open the embossed main custom font file.
Call up the FaceMaker dialog:
Filters>>Custom Font Tools>>Custom Font FaceMaker v.0.10...
Set the options as shown below. Click on the xcf custom font file option and navigate to the embossed panel file you saved earlier.
Save this final version of the embbossed characters so that you can re-use it.
All that remains to be done is to add a décor layer to the characters with texture and colour in FaceMaker, using a suitable mode, for a finished custom font. This one is taken from a layer filled with a Gimp pattern:
And this one used a panel with a different colour:
Or how about adding another panel - if you have room?
And finally a couple of examples in another custom font.
Have fun...

Just in case anyone needs a little more guidance, here is an over view of the process:
Part 1: Create your main custom font characters and save
Part 2: Trim a duplcate file of the characters into smaller panels according to your taste using Custom Font Layer Utils and save these new panel characters.
Part 3: Use your filters to change the appearance of the panel characters and save your work.
Part 4: Open the main character file and combine the panel file with it using Custom Font FaceMaker in combine mode.
Save your work.
