Adding an outline to Custom Fonts (for GimpTurkey):

Post#1 by skinnyhouse » 03 Oct 2021, 12:40

Step 1:

Make an embossed version of your base custom font; you can always keep this version for future use.

Step 2:

Add the decoration with FaceMaker and save the file.

Step 3:

Use a copy of the custom font (or base font) to make an outline font version.

Step 4:

Set your outline foreground and background colours in Gimp.
Use Custom Font Bevel Reflect (default values) to smarten up the outline.

Step 5:

Open the first version of the custom font.
Use FaceMaker to combine the outline version with this version. This will apply the version that you choose from the dialog over the top of the version you have as the active image in Gimp.

Note the use of Normal mode.

Sometimes you may want to do it the other way round - perhaps if you have a relatively deep outline.

Sounds like something serious is happening.

If you are up for it.
Perhaps you could try with just one letter and post your results after each step so I could see what the problem is.

One final go to get it right for you then.....

Assume you have made two custom font files and saved them in a folder somewhere.

One is the decoration.

The other is the outline.

My Save dialog looked like this...

Open the decoration version as the active image.
Now call up FaceMaker and use these settings.
Navigate to the folder where the outline version lives. The characters must all end with .png

The filter will not combine the two custom fonts unless all the layers are named properly.

Best of luck GT
