I added a manual process before you could Register or Log in.
All you have to do is click the Populate button (twice) to generate a "current numeric" number.
Once this number is generated, then you can click the register/login button.
Without the number populated properly, the buttons don't work.
It's a little more work but it should prevent bots spammers.

Test registration/logging in with populate current numeric field. Successful.

The best captchas require a logical solve, color identification, or humanish procedure.

I myself HATE recaptcha with a fierceness like the flames of hell. Why provide google free machine learning? Why allow google yet another way to track site use (assumes adblocking (I am))? Why torment users into solving dozens of "puzzles" before login? I have ended purchase relationships with companies preventing me from interacting with support people with a recaptcha failure wall.

recaptcha won't stop spammers: anti-captcha.com
Bear in mind if you adopt the akismet route for weighing replies you are violating a user's Expectation of Privacy

IP address, user agent, user name, email address, the user's website profile field, post contents and many $_SERVER variables are sent to Akismet servers when new post is created
Consider requiring a participation hurdle

possibly combine below a count threshold this logic test per post
www.phpbb.com/customise/db/extension/sortables_captcha/

github uses a version of an image orientation puzzle

there is an addon I cannot find that requires sliding an arrow. I suppose this too could be iMacros scripted. The idea is to make yourself a less desirable target the same way I don't try to stop all tracking (uBlock Origin, et al) but I also employ a poison strategy.

@xrek ,
Thank you for your reply.
Recaptcha is only when you register not when you log in. Once you're on you don't see recaptcha ever again.
Personally I use Google for searching and analytics, and adsense so I am biased towards their products.
For now I seem to have no spammer bots.
I'll keep these things in mind to try if I start getting tons of spammer bots again.
