You're right, with the path tool, i can see how dragging the a little will create a curve which will create smoother shapes than lasso tool. Maybe I'll try that next.

theres another trick i forgot to mention:

resize the image real small (like 300px)
import into Inkscape and 'Trace Bitmap'

because of the smaller size, the tracing simplifies the shapes

Does that work? I thought it would destroy details, No?
Well I'll remember that if I start using Inkscape.

you can use different resolutions of bitmap traces and composite them, preserving the detail you want (like eyes)

Just brainstorming here, but wouldn't that be like blurring with radiuses?

I am gonna probably work on something like an elephant next (not sure when to start), trying using path tool instead of free select.

well you have two advantages:

1.) the trace is a path that you can edit
2.) the tracing process smooths out some of the edges in addition to the smoothing you applied with Quantizing

Next time I find motivation, I think i'll to trace indexed colors (maybe try like 8 colors) instead of threshold.
I am curious to see the result of that.

I recommend saulgoode's Quantize script.
Does the same thing, but with added smoothing option and automatically converts back into RGB for further processing.
