Thank you for compliments Pat & OMG. Wish I could simplify the workflow, it still takes around 8 minutes to finish because of having to manually tweak some settings and colors.

Awesome results guys. Tim, I like the head/fog lights shining on the porsche. Nidhogg, I wonder how you got yours to look so smooth. I appreciate the different wave styles so I threw something together. Thanks Tim.

Nice looking parrot Archie, fits well in the 80s retro theme with palms and sun.
My workflow included several filters to achieve the smooth look.
I used highlight bloom, bilateral smooth and posterize. You can find all these filters in the G'mic plug-in.
The posterize filter in G'mic (under artistic) includes a smoothness slider, very helpful as you see in the example attached below, it was applied to the original black widow image.
I also used shadows-highlights with custom settings to flatten the color tones. Like extreme tone-mapping.
Colors were changed last, using Hue-Saturation.
Tim's multi threshold, or ColorMap are good for quick initial results, but they both work like normal palette posterize and separate the colors into too many small spots.
Other plug-ins for this kind of work I can mention are Color selective blur and saulgoode's Quantize script.

Thanks nidhogg and thank you for your detailed response. I was thinking about some kind of crazy mix of black metal and synth wave styles. I haven't run very far with that idea yet. I'm going to be playing using your suggestions.
