How to get vintage "deckle edge" border?
How can I get a vintage "deckle edge" border, similar to photos 100 or more years ago? (See example below--you will have to look closely at the photo to see the actual edge. It should look like a ragged line.) Ideally, I would like for the border to be dynamically sized, similar to what the Add Border filter does now.

I made this image, by first making a rectangle selection.enxio27 wrote: ↑17 Jul 2019, 01:26How can I get a vintage "deckle edge" border, similar to photos 100 or more years ago? Ideally, I would like for it to be dynamically sized, similar to what the Add Border filter does now.
Then going to Select > Distort and using the setting seen below.
Play with the Distortion setting, to get the kind of distress you're looking to recreate. This is my resulting image, after adding a drop shadow and filling it with black.
Below is the xcf file I used, to create this image.
Which should contains the selection I made and save to the Channels dialog.

I've used various setting, using Distort Selection.
To show the different degrees, which can be achieved.

Thank you so much Wallace. Helpful answer and shots with settings.

Thanks Issabella.

I hope it is close to what enxio27 was trying to achieve .

There is another way, use a grayscale brush as a stamp using the eraser tool. A photograph deckle edge was typically symmetrical. I have one or two with diferent patterns this screenshot is a repeating rounded one.
Books would have that torn deckle edge and Wallaces example is as good as you get. I could never get a good result with select-distort and eventuall scanned a strip of torn paper. Can't get more realistic than that, still using it. That was in Gimp 2.6 days & needed both horizontal and vertical. No rotate brush then, all you need now is one.

When you make your own, make them big, two sided for top/bottom, left/right set spacing to 100. Then size the brush down to suit the image, and of course you can erase in straight lines with shift-click or nibble away at the edge.

Wallace, I am missing something. How did you get the torn edging on the outside of the border, not the inside. Can you make it on the inside and outside of the border?
