Fixing older color photos?

Post#1 by enxio27 » 09 Sep 2019, 03:52

I've recently begun scanning older color photos from my family, many of which have faded, yellowed, or otherwise the color isn't what it was. Is there a tool, plugin, or script somewhere that will help me restore the color on these? All of the manual adjustments, curves, histograms, etc. are over my head.

I was scannIng in old photos several years ago which is how I found Gimp in the first place. I know that I have some tuts in my files that show some repairs of different types. I will look for them today if I can.

Generally, get the best scan that you can to start with and that depends on which scanner you have. Make a copy to work on and put your original scan in an "originals" folder. This way you can always make more work copies if needed.

I always check the white balance first. Surprising how much this can improve colors if there is enough information left in the photo.

Thanks, Pat! I would love it if you could find those tuts. The photos I'm trying to fix are mostly too yellow or too blue. I tried a white balance on the first one and didn't like the result at all.

I really wish there were an "easy button" for this. I used to have a software package that would fix old color photos, but unfortunately it's not made anymore, and apparently I no longer have the registration key to reinstall it.

I found some but they are too large to be accepted. Do you have an email for this purpose or a dropbox? I have the urls for some of them.

I hope these are helpful. If you have a particular problem not spoken to in the tutorials, please bring it to the forum. There are some really good photo people and someone will probably know what to do.
