GNU definition (SOLVED)

Hi, I'm trying to learn more about the whole of GIMP, I can't understand or find online the exact meaning of GNU (i look at definitions on the web and it says "GNU not unix") ok, but what does the 'G' stand for? I know some may say just get in the car and drive, let the mechanic worry about performance, however when your in love, arguably, you want to know every detail?

Good question. I also don't know what GNU stands for.

I found it. GNU is a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not Unix!", So it stands for GNU's Not Unix where if some asks what does the GNU stand for in "GNU's Not Unix" that's what it stands for.
the recursive part is the confusing part.

I guess it could've been any letter and then NU like ANU or BNU...but the important thing is it's recursive...so G can't stand for anything else other than GNU because if it did it wouldn't be recursive acronym.

This may explain the GNU...

GIMP was originally released as the General Image Manipulation Program. In 1995 Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis began developing GIMP as a semester-long project at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1996 GIMP (0.54) was released as the first publicly available release. In the following year Richard Stallman visited UC Berkeley where Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis asked if they could change General to GNU (the name given to the operating system created by Stallman). Richard Stallman approved and the definition of the acronym GIMP was changed to be the GNU Image Manipulation Program. This reflected its new existence as being developed as Free Software as a part of the GNU Project.

Nice, so now I'll just think of the "G" as "General".
Aye aye, General!
