How to highlight an image of text in GIMP (black text over white background)
This is to highlight black text over white background, if your text and background are different colors other than black and white, don't do step 7. but just change the opacity of your layer to a lower setting so that the original layer/image shows through.
1. Open the image you wish to highlight in GIMP. Here, we're just using a screen capture from http://www.lipsum.com/

2. Use a select tool to select area you wish to highlight. Here, we're using the "Rectangle Select Tool" (Once you have an area selected, if you want to select additional rectangles, just hold down the Shift key [on Windows] and start selecting additional rectangles.

3. Right click the layer and select "New Layer".

4. Select Transparency and click "OK" to create new layer.

5. Click on Foreground color, and select a yellow color (or a color of your choice to use as highlight color).

6. Click and drag Foreground color onto image (this fills the selected area, with our foreground color).

7. Click "Mode" in the Layers window and select "Multiply" mode.

8. And you'll get a result that looks like this where the black shows through the yellow and the white just gets colored as yellow, it's what the "Multiply" mode does.
